Dr. Leandra Binder holds an MA in English literature from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and a Ph.D. in British/Irish Literature from the University of New Mexico. Leandra’s scholarship focuses on Victorian literature and Literature in Transition, as well as literary criticism and aesthetic theory, and in particular the work of Vernon Lee (Violet Paget) and Oscar Wilde. Her innovative dissertation, “The Ego at an Impasse: Aesthetic Empathy and the Abject d’ Art in Fin de Siècle Supernatural Fiction,” defines a trope she calls the abject d’art, that is, artistic representations of corpses used to explore abjection. Her MA thesis, “Text and Paratext in Oscar Wilde’s A House of Pomegranates” examines the complex subtext formed by the illustrations of Charles Ricketts and Charles Shannon which accompanied the first edition of the fairy tale collection.
